When kids get home from school, they are usually ready for a snack before doing homework and getting settled for bed. There are a few snacks that you can make during the day that will be ready for your children to enjoy when they walk in the door.
A fruit smoothie is easy to make as all you have to do is add ingredients to a blender. The base is simple. All you need is milk and ice. Add the kinds of fruit that your children like and maybe even a vegetable or two, but make sure the color of the fruit hides that of the vegetable because your child might not drink the smoothie if it’s green or resembles a vegetable drink. Strawberries and bananas work well together along with blueberries and raspberries. Try to use fresh fruits instead of those that are frozen. Add a bit of vanilla ice cream to make the smoothie a little sweeter.
Instead of serving chips and junk food, slice bagels into thin pieces, baking them until they are crisp. Sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon for a healthy snack. Garlic and Parmesan cheese can also be used on bagels for a treat that’s a little more savory.
If your child is like many others, then eating with the hands is always preferred instead of using a fork or spoon. Put small pieces of fruits on a pretzel stick that can be dipped in yogurt or another dip, such as sour cream and brown sugar. Another fun snack idea is a cheesy Chex mix. Combine three kinds of Chex cereal with 2 tablespoons of butter in a sauce pan. Add mini pretzels and cheese crackers just before removing the pan from the heat. If you want to add a little kick to the snack, then consider using Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce. A hint of garlic powder can also be added along with grated Parmesan cheese for a delicious and healthy treat.
