Renown Health Opening New Clinic in South Reno

The expanding population of South Reno will soon have another option for health care as Renown Health opens its twelfth clinic in the region. The family health practice clinic will occupy three storefronts at The Summit Mall and will provide much needed services in the South Meadows area.

Patients entering clinic will find the atmosphere to be comfortable and inviting, as it was designed to feel like a living room. The facility will also include a conference room to allow patients a private space to meet with staff.

At present, the Summit Mall clinic has a staff of 11, although Renown may add an additional primary care physician and nurse practitioner. Primary health care services and a laboratory are offered, but the 10,000 square foot clinic has room to expand to offer more services in the future.

At least twelve Reno-based contractors were needed to convert the space, formerly occupied by a menswear store, into a medical facility. The project took more than three months to complete.

In 2016, Renown doctors and specialists delivered over 4,000 babies, performed more than 19,000 same-day surgeries, had nearly 700,000 patient visits, and performed more than two and a half million tests. The network includes hospitals, urgent care facilities, specialist services in health laboratories and imaging, in addition to a variety of specialists. Renown also operates a not-for profit insurance company called Hometown Health.

Renown Health is a locally-governed health network, with over 150 members of the community holding positions on Renown boards or serving in advisory roles. Since Renown is not-for-profit, all earnings are reinvested into the community. In 2016, more than $78 million were spent on community programs and health services, and $63 million were spent on capital improvements. In addition, Renown provides more than 12,000 direct and indirect local jobs, making it one of Northern Nevada’s largest employers.

First Study Attempt on E-cigarettes Reveals its Damaging Nature on the Gums

According to research conducted by the Rochester University, findings show that E-cigarettes are equally as harmful as conventional cigarettes especially with the extent to which they damage the gums and teeth. This study was carried out by a respectable professor, Irfan Rahman. Irfan is a professor of environmental medicine and dentistry at the Rochester. In fact, this study was the first ever attempt made towards trying to expose the detrimental effects of electronic cigarettes on the oral health of individuals at both molecular and cellular levels.


It is alarming how electronic cigarettes continue to gain much popularity among the younger generation just because they are perceived as safer and healthier. According to Oncotarget research, scientists were of the opinion that the smoke in the cigarettes was responsible for causing damaging effects on a smoker’s health. However, this assumption has been disputed strongly as data that is more scientific was gathered and proves that this could not necessarily be true.

Rahman explained how the research they conducted at the University revealed the way vapor from e-cigs gets burnt and in turn release inflammatory proteins that cause a strain within the cells and as such trigger a number of oral diseases. He further explained that the extent of the damage to the gums and overall oral health depends on the frequency and the amount of e-cigs someone smokes every day.

In the study, 3-dimensional human nonsmoker tissues were exposed to the vapors that are contained in e-cigarettes to determine their damage on the gums. Also alongside this aspect, was an investigation concerning the flavorings that often added in the electronic cigarettes. Fawad Javed, a student that was involved in the study, reveals that according to findings, the flavorings that were put in the e-cigs only worked to worsen the damage of the vapor. E-cigarettes seem to cause more harm because, in addition to the vapor and flavoring, they also contain nicotine that is found in the conventional cigarettes and is well known for contributing towards the gum diseases.

Memorial Health is a hospital safety net for many poor and indigent in the Savannah area. Though an unprofitable population to serve, Memorial has been and continues to provide dignified, thorough, expert care to a population that, in overwhelming numbers, is not equal to paying for their services.
This issue is just one of dozens of financial challenges facing CEO Maggie Gill. Perhaps the most public of these, and one diagnosed by everyone from the local journalist to heads of hospital boards, is the recent breakdown of the Novant Health Association relationship.

Facing financial crisis, Gill was in favor of considering Novant Health’s proposal for Memorial Health to become part of the Novant family. However, complications and communication issues haunted the discussions almost from the outset.

Few people realize how many moving parts there are in an alignment of this kind. Each hospital has a board and in this case, the county board is also involved because they own the land on which Memorial Health is built. Perhaps it would be inaccurate to say that every member of each of those boards is intimately involved in the process, but it is not exaggeration to say that many authoritative, influential parties do have a say. Coordinating all those voices and opinions became a two year process for Maggie Gill and her disappointment was immense when the effort failed.

Based on her experience, first-hand knowledge of the situation and appreciation of the stakes, Ms. Gill still refuses to blame anyone. Rather, she points to the size of the project and number of moving parts as the key reason for the association’s demise.

Ms. Gill is facing the new game situation with her customary efficiency and expeditiousness. She has already implemented new projects to revamp Memorial Health and place it on sound financial footing, but she cautions that this is another long-term project and it will take many such to revitalize Memorial Health, though Gill never doubts that it can be accomplished.

McDonalds Has A New Meatless Burger In Italy

A new burger has hit the order menu at McDonalds, a meatless burger aimed at the chocolate-loving crowds in Italy. It’s called the Nutella burger, though by traditional standards it might hardly be considered a burger. It does come packaged in a burger box just like the other main meal sandwiches do at McDonalds, and even has the regular buns surrounding it. But take one bite out of it and instead of being greeted by the expected rich beef flavor, you’d find a rich dark chocolate taste instead. This new sandwich is ordered as part or the McCafe menu, and is the second major chocolate experiment put out by McDonalds this year after they introduced chocolate-covered fries in Japan.


So how has this new dessert sandwich performed? Quite well considering McDonalds’ social media page blew up with over 60,000 Facebook shares, and certainly has trended over in Europe. What will the success of this burger mean for McDonalds and the chocolate market in the future? Could we possibly be seeing the start of a side McChocolate franchise?
