Eric Lefkofsky strikes deal with CancerLinQ to provide analytic services

Tempus, the database and knowledge discovery firm founded by Eric Lefkofsky, has recently announced that it will be entering into a major deal with CancerLinQ, one of the largest collators of cancer-related data in the world. This is a major step forward in the development of the Tempus platform, which has only been in development since the end of 2016.

CancerLinQ is a non-profit organization that is a subsidiary of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the largest organization of oncologists in the world. The incredible thing about the deal is that it will combine the immense power of Tempus’ analytic capabilities with the vast reams of data collected over the years within the CancerLinQ system.

This marriage of powerful, machine-learning-based analysis with one of the greatest troves of cancer-related data currently in existence will mark the opening of a new frontier in the fight against cancer. Lefkofsky has said that it is only a matter of time until platforms like Tempus, which are able to harness data from sources as disparate as patient records and human genomic sequencing, will be able to give oncologists a granularity of understanding that will make current treatment protocols look as primitive as a horse-drawn carriage.

Lefkofsky has said that one of the biggest problems with the current treatment protocols, most of which are based heavily on the pillars of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, is the raw crudity with which they are applied. Lefkofsky says that the distributions of patient outcomes are currently far too wide for cancer treatment regimens. For example, a given chemotherapeutic treatment regimen may see survival rates ranging from a couple of weeks all the way up to ten years, and this is even after having been controlled for staging and known patient risk factors.

Survival distributions encompassing such a wide spectrum of outcomes tend to be the rule in cancer treatment rather than the exception. This high amount of variance is not indicative of a field that has been thoroughly mastered by medical science. On the contrary, it illustrates a profound lack of understanding on the part of the oncology profession as to what factors are truly important in the goal of maximizing survival rates.

Lefkofsky points out that such wide distributions of patient outcomes are not accepted in other areas of medicine. For example, diseases like tuberculosis were once deadly for a large number of people. Some people died almost immediately after being diagnosed with the disease, whereas others were able to live for decades with it. Today, Tuberculosis is considered almost 100 percent curable in patients with normal immune systems, with the distribution of patient outcomes heavily skewed towards almost universal 10-year survival.

The almost total success of modern tuberculosis treatments are a function of increased understanding that has resulted from more than a century of major advances in the disease’s treatment.

Like the progression of tuberculosis treatment, Lefkofsky believes that the revolution currently taking place in the analysis of cancer and genomic data will eventually lead to cancer becoming a far more survivable disease. He points to various forms of cancer today that have high survival rates, as well as rare individuals who are able to beat even the deadliest forms of cancer. Lefkofsky states that the main reason the distribution of patient outcomes is so wide for many forms of cancer is because oncologists simply don’t understand the underlying factors that may allow one patient to beat a given cancer type with simple chemotherapy while the same disease utterly consumes another patient. Tempus’ partnership with CancerLinQ will go a long ways towards providing the granular understanding of patient characteristics that will someday lead to far more accurate and effective treatments being devised.

Renown Health Opening New Clinic in South Reno

The expanding population of South Reno will soon have another option for health care as Renown Health opens its twelfth clinic in the region. The family health practice clinic will occupy three storefronts at The Summit Mall and will provide much needed services in the South Meadows area.

Patients entering clinic will find the atmosphere to be comfortable and inviting, as it was designed to feel like a living room. The facility will also include a conference room to allow patients a private space to meet with staff.

At present, the Summit Mall clinic has a staff of 11, although Renown may add an additional primary care physician and nurse practitioner. Primary health care services and a laboratory are offered, but the 10,000 square foot clinic has room to expand to offer more services in the future.

At least twelve Reno-based contractors were needed to convert the space, formerly occupied by a menswear store, into a medical facility. The project took more than three months to complete.

In 2016, Renown doctors and specialists delivered over 4,000 babies, performed more than 19,000 same-day surgeries, had nearly 700,000 patient visits, and performed more than two and a half million tests. The network includes hospitals, urgent care facilities, specialist services in health laboratories and imaging, in addition to a variety of specialists. Renown also operates a not-for profit insurance company called Hometown Health.

Renown Health is a locally-governed health network, with over 150 members of the community holding positions on Renown boards or serving in advisory roles. Since Renown is not-for-profit, all earnings are reinvested into the community. In 2016, more than $78 million were spent on community programs and health services, and $63 million were spent on capital improvements. In addition, Renown provides more than 12,000 direct and indirect local jobs, making it one of Northern Nevada’s largest employers.

Why Omelettes Are One of the Healthiest Meals You Can Have

There are tons of healthy dishes out there, but there’s one healthy dish that takes the cake every time, and that’s omelettes. Omelettes are overwhelmingly healthy because of their combination of essential nutrients. They combine all of the major food groups to give you a tasty, healthy, affordable and easy meal.

What’s so great about what’s in omelettes?

Omelettes are ideal as a breakfast, lunch or dinner because they include protein, vegetables, calcium and healthy fats. Let’s start with protein.

Naturally, the eggs in your omelette are going to be a great source of protein. The whites in your eggs actually have most of the protein, which is a little known fact. Next, if you like, you may consider adding some other sources of meat protein. Chopped up ham, bacon or sausage in an omelette is always tasty.

Next, you have vegetables. The great thing about omelettes is that you can put as many vegetables as you want inside. And you can cater the vegetables to your own personal tastes. For example, if you don’t like onions, forget the onion! If you like mushrooms and tomatoes, they’re yours. Most nutritionists who recommend eating omelettes on a regular basis will recommend putting lots of vegetables inside because the more vegetables you eat, the healthier you will be, and that’s a fact.

Now, let’s talk about calcium. Adding cheese to your omelettes can up the amount of calcium in them. The great thing about cheese and how much is that you can vary by types up whenever you want. Most people put cheddar and mozzarella cheese in their omelettes, but why not try feta cheese or blue cheese for a change? These different types of cheeses can really change the flavor of omelette.

Finally, we have healthy fats. The fats that are in omelettes are located mostly in the oils that you use to sauté your vegetables and make your eggs. Nutritionists recommend using either extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil for these tasks. Extra virgin olive oil is excellent for getting omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, which helps improve heart health, brain health and eyesight.

Maggie Gill’s Take on the Novant Health Association Project

Memorial Health is a hospital safety net for many poor and indigent in the Savannah area. Though an unprofitable population to serve, Memorial has been and continues to provide dignified, thorough, expert care to a population that, in overwhelming numbers, is not equal to paying for their services.
This issue is just one of dozens of financial challenges facing CEO Maggie Gill. Perhaps the most public of these, and one diagnosed by everyone from the local journalist to heads of hospital boards, is the recent breakdown of the Novant Health Association relationship.

Facing financial crisis, Gill was in favor of considering Novant Health’s proposal for Memorial Health to become part of the Novant family. However, complications and communication issues haunted the discussions almost from the outset.

Few people realize how many moving parts there are in an alignment of this kind. Each hospital has a board and in this case, the county board is also involved because they own the land on which Memorial Health is built. Perhaps it would be inaccurate to say that every member of each of those boards is intimately involved in the process, but it is not exaggeration to say that many authoritative, influential parties do have a say. Coordinating all those voices and opinions became a two year process for Maggie Gill and her disappointment was immense when the effort failed.

Based on her experience, first-hand knowledge of the situation and appreciation of the stakes, Ms. Gill still refuses to blame anyone. Rather, she points to the size of the project and number of moving parts as the key reason for the association’s demise.

Ms. Gill is facing the new game situation with her customary efficiency and expeditiousness. She has already implemented new projects to revamp Memorial Health and place it on sound financial footing, but she cautions that this is another long-term project and it will take many such to revitalize Memorial Health, though Gill never doubts that it can be accomplished.
