Hostess Introduces The Fried Twinkie In Two Flavors

Just when you thought the U.S. couldn’t get any fatter or unhealthy, Hostess just announced that deep fried Twinkies will hit the store shelves soon. Previously only found at the local state fair grounds, this sweet, creamy ball of grease and sugar is slated to hit store shelves this month.

Two flavors – original and chocolate – will be found in your grocer’s freezer. (Yes, you’re supposed to heat them up). It’s doubtful that this heart attack on a still will even reach the oven. Surely, no one is surprised about this. It was only a matter of time. Actually, I’m surprised it took this long. But, I never imagined them being frozen and needing to be heated in the oven or microwave. Something about that doesn’t sound right.

My question: will they taste like what you get at the fair? Only time will tell. I cannot see how Hostess can duplicate that hot, crispy melt-in-your-mouth flavor. Oh, and that aroma.

Once Hostess made the announcement on Twitter, it quickly began to trend. Most of the tweets were hilariously gloomy. In a country that has its share of obese adults and children, diabetes and other obesity-related diseases, deep fried Twinkies aren’t getting much love. Most of the tweets pondered the question: Aren’t we already fat enough? There were plenty of #Diabetes hashtags all day long.

Personally, I hope the Twinkies are a flop. I don’t want to be tempted in any way because I could already stand to lose a few pounds. Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to happen. People will bite into these things and proclaim them the best thing since sliced bread.

No doubt that Hostess is trying to make a quick buck. But do we really need this? Apparently, we don’t have enough 1,000 calorie desserts to go around already. I don’t think Hostess is done by a long shot. Next year, they will introduce the fried Dong Dong. Just watch.
