Mexican Conchas Hold As Much Mystery As They Do Flavor

Many people may not know it, but Mexico has some of the most delicious and decadent desserts in the world. There are literally hundreds of bakeries that sell every type of sweet treat a person could desire. If you count, you could find more bakeries than grocery stores. But the one sweet and fabulous breakfast treat that most people desire is the Mexican conchas

The cookie-topped bread is indeed very mysterious. Although people people aren’t very sure, the bread is believed to have been created during colonial times in Mexico. Although the conchas are fairly easy to make, they are made in two parts. The ingredients include the milk, flour, sugar, shortening and butter and yeast. When done, they are anywhere between 4-6 inches in diameter. The conchas are also round and scored on top to resemble a sea shell.

Conchas come in a variety of flavors — cinnamon, golden raisin, walnut, vanilla and even Mexican wedding cookie flavor. They are often topped with confection sugar and some are filled with berries and jams. Most people love them because of their versatility.

Mexican American bakers have brought these sweet treats to the U.S. and made them even better. They love experimenting with different flavors but they don’t changed the cookie top, which is a staple of the pastry.

As for the history of the conchas, no one knows for sure. It is unknown how or why the cookie top came into existence. Was it by sheer accident or on purpose? Or did the Europeans, who were also excellent bakers, add it?

There was a great deal of cross-baking going on in the 1500s up to the 1800s. A number of countries got ideas from others and added their own spin.

If you ask the Mexicans, they could care less. As far as they’re concerned, they take full credit for the creation. Take a conchas and dip it in a cup of hot coffee or chocalate and you will be in heaven.

Stephen Murray, Former CCMP CEO, Passes Away

Stephen Murray was a successful business executive and investor, who died at the age of 52 on March 12, 2015. Murray reached high levels of success in his business career. Up until a month before his death, Murray served as the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of CCMP Capital, a private equity firm which he co-founded in 2006.

The company was a spin-off of JP Morgan Chase, and was created out of a need to avoid possible conflicts with clients of JP Morgan Chase bank. The company became very successful, raising $3.6 billion in 2014. The firm works primarily in the consumer, industrial, health care, and energy sectors, and typically invests $100 million to $500 million of equity per transaction. Read more: Stephen P. Murray, 52; Financial Executive; Stamford Resident; Vice Chair Boston College Board of Trustees

The firm’s specialty is in middle-market leveraged buyouts and growth-equity investments. Murray is cited as playing a major role in the success and growth of CCMP since its inception.

Stephen Murray had been with the predecessor firm to CCMP since 1989 as it went through various ownership changes. Eventually Stephen Murray became the CEO as it became its own stand-alone firm. Murray resigned as CEO of CCMP only a month before his death, due to unspecified health-related reasons.

In addition to his success in business and investment, Murray was an avid philanthropist. He was a supporter of many institutions, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York, the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, and the Stamford Museum. He also supported educational institutions including Boston College and the Columbia Business School.

Murray also served as a board member for various companies, including Aramark, The Vitamin Shoppe, AMC Entertainment, Crestcom International, Infogroup Inc., and others.

For Many Hungry Olympians, McDonald’s Is The Food Of Choice

A current online article that I just read mentions how the McDonald’s restaurant that is in operation at the site of the 2016 Olympics is attracting steady streams of customers.

According to this article, many of the approximately 10,000 athletes, coaches and staff members who are temporarily staying at the Olympic Village are choosing to eat Big Macs and fries over other types of food that are served at the main food court. From morning until nighttime, there are lines of people from all over the planet waiting to acquire some of this fast food.

It would be logical to assume that the professional athletes at the Olympics would be on special diets that would probably not include lots of McDonald’s food. But, since they are human beings with appetites, the lure of McChicken sandwiches, milkshakes and apple pies is apparently too strong for multitudes of Olympians.

McDonald’s is a longtime sponsor of Olympic events and all of the food for the athletes, coaches and other personnel is provided free of charge. Whether the free status of the food is a large contributing factor in the massive interest in McDonald’s food at the Olympics is up for speculation.

Being a fan of the foods served at McDonald’s restaurants, I can understand the appeal of the chains’ menu offerings. Even though the main dining hall at the village offers free foods such as pizza and pasta, Asian and Brazilian items, BBQ foods, sandwiches, fresh fruit, and traditional dishes from around the world, they seemingly aren’t enough to satisfy the appetites of the masses.

Even while it has been raining outside, hungry and determined Olympians have been standing in lines that have been described as being longer than a football field.

Apparently in an effort to speed up the lines, McDonald’s this week announced that a limit of 20 items per customer can be ordered at one time.

This article really got me to thinking about the McDonald’s operation at the Olympics. With long lines of customers present both day and night, the restaurant must need a lot of employees, as well as regular replenishment of food supplies. I also can’t help but wonder what will become of this McDonald’s restaurant when the Olympic games end.

Hippeas: The newest snack venture from Livio Bisterzo and Green Park Brands

Introduced to the market March this year, Hippeas is a new organic chickpea snack brand that delivers low in calories vegan gluten free puffs. The brand is found in retail stores such as  Boots, Holland & Barrett, and Starbucks. The unique packaging and the brand name are clearly aimed to attract “hippie” millennial consumers.

Its personality and tone of voice is inspired by the iconic beaming face of the original hippie epoch. Nevertheless, the brand has been created to appeal to a current millennial audience. A brave yellow face with different colored tongue for various flavors is used as a visual identity.

The product does not contain any gluten, it delivers low in calories proposition The protein and fiber content of the product is equally higher, and it comes in 6 different flavors.

Nutrimost: The Fitness System Other Fitness Systems Want To Be

Throughout the ages, there have been many different weight loss programs that have promised a lot of good results. However, even the best of them were only somewhat effective. Only a few people would be able to lose weight while others find themselves going back to the drawing board and even giving up. Then Nutrimost came in. With Nutrimost came another company by the name of Healthy Living. Healthy Living has decided to rip off Nutrimost by taking its ad and replacing mentions of Nutrimost with the words “Can’t Lose”. This has resulted in the company getting sued for all of the damages it has caused.

Losing Weight and feeling great with NutriMost

While that is a rather low thing to do, it is understandable that a successful company is going to bring out other companies that want to be that company. The other companies want it that bad that they would resort to unexpected measures to manage that. Among these measures is trying to rip off that company. With Nutrimost, having results such as people losing 20 lbs within their first 40 days is a huge feat. It is no wonder another company is going to try to rip off Nutrimost. However, their reputation is earned. Nutrimost has earned its success and is not going to allow another company to steal from it.

With Nutrimost, people don’t just lose weight, they actually change their whole lives. Their bodies change in many different ways. Their minds also change because of the diet that is suggested by Nutrimost based on the body chemistry of the individual. They are able to enjoy some good food while losing off the excess weight that has made them ashamed. They also experience an increased amount of energy from their fitness system. As a result, they are more encouraged to maintain a healthy weight and enjoy their new lifestyle.

Stephen Murray Was a Philanthropist That Went The Extra Mile

Stephen Murray was the type of person that did a lot for CCMP Capital as president and chief executive officer. His mark on the company will forever remain as the company moves forward in the future. That is something that will never change any time soon and it will stay that way even though Stephen Murray is no longer around.

However, while his accomplishments at the the private equity firm deserve their praise and their acknowledgement, it is more important to remember his meaningful work as a philanthropist. That speaks to what kind of person he was and how he went above and beyond the call of duty to help people.

When you are as successful as Stephen Murray was, a lot of people tend to just focus on business and go about their way. They don’t often look at the big picture. However, Stephen Murray was always a big picture guy and someone that knew there were people out there that needed help and needed some guidance. While money is great and can help and make a big difference, there is also something extra in the fact that someone spends time with people in need, gets to know them, relate to them, and help them in other ways.

For example, he helped with the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. These are people that are starving and every meal matters to them and is so important. He would spend time with them, feed them, and try to be there for them. He believed that no one should go hungry and no one should have to suffer from starvation. Hunger is a big problem in the world we live in and Stephen sought to do something about it. He didn’t believe in standing on the sidelines and letting these people go hungry.

Stephen Murray also gave back to his college, Boston College, where he graduated in 1984. If he could talk to a student, help them with their education, or offer any advice, he was more than willing to give his time.

Again, money is great and can make a big difference, but there is no substitute for time and giving your time to people that really truly need it and get something out of it. Stephen’s loss has left a hole at CCMP Capital but it also left a void in the world of philanthropy. Hopefully, someone picks up the slack in his place.

Tips for the New Urban Gardener

If you live in the city, you know that the color green is scarce. Of course, you may have trees in your neighborhood. In fact, let’s hope you do. Neighbors may have potted plants on their doorsteps, or perhaps you have them on your own deck or porch.

But what about real greenery? Wouldn’t you like to actually see an actual garden every once in a while? Well, here comes urban gardening. If you’ve ever thought about urban gardening, now is the time to start. After all, there’s no time like the present.

The Foundations of a Great Urban Garden

You don’t have to have an amazing green thumb to be able to to garden in your urban dwelling like a champ. Experts do recommend that you start slow, and naturally, before you do anything, you need to examine your sunlight options. Do you have a balcony, porch or deck? Can you put things on the roof of your building or on the steps? If these aren’t options for you, you still might be in luck. Big windows can help a lot.

What Kind of sunlight Do You Have?

As you assess your window and sunlight options, keep in mind that veggies like peppers, eggplants and tomatoes need at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. Herbs and loose leaf greens can do with less. These veggies can stand about 3 hours of sun and still do well.

Size of Pots

Another thing you’ll need to think about is the size of plants. Chances are that you’ll need to purchase a few large potting plants if you’re in this urban gardening thing for real. If you want to go small, that’s still possible as well. Consider getting a few 2 to 3 gallon containers for things like herbs, hot peppers and leafy greens. You can even put some leafy greens in potting containers like these. Plants that need larger pots include eggplants and large tomatoes.

Finally, when it comes to care, you’ll need to baby them at first. Make sure the plants are in light potting mix. Don’t use regular garden soil that you would put in an actual garden. From there, make sure to fertilize weekly and water daily or whenever the plants are thirsty.
